Limitations of MBR and advantages of GPT

Limitations of MBR and advantages of GPT, Gradually by all manufacturers it will produce the adoption of  UEFI , the new specification that will replace our antiquated BIOS , so it is not uncommon for most laptops and desktops fairly modern and bring with him.

Limitations of MBR and Advantages of GPT

This results in a variation of the process of creating a USB flash drive to install Windows that we were traditionally performed in order to be able to exploit all the advantages and benefits offered by this new “BIOS”, among which there is a significant increase boot, improving passing from the post until it yields to the operating system startup. UEFI (Unified Extensible Firmware Interface) is an interface between the operating system and firmware designed to replace the interface BIOS (Basic Input Output System).

UEFI was initially developed by Intel and the Currently more than 140 companies among which are Lenovo, Microsoft or IBM.

Its development is due to give solution to the limitations of the BIOS; its advantages are:

  • Increased security by providing pre – boot protection against attacks from boot-kit.
  • Start and resume from hibernation shorter.
  • Support greater than 2TB drives.
  • Compatibility with existing device drivers 64-bit firmware.
  • Ability to use UEFI BIOS with hardware.

Before using a new disc, you must be partitioned, two different ways to format to store the partition information are UEFI and GPT, this is important because this information contains, for example, data on where the partition begins, which sectors they belong to that partition and what is the start.

  • MBR (Master Boot Record)
  • GPT (GUID Partition Table)

MBR (Master Boot Record)

Created in 1983 for the first IBM PC DOS 2.0, is called “Master Boot Record” (master boot record) because the information is in the zero sector at the beginning of the unit, this mode supports maximum sizes of disk 2TB and up four primary partitions to have more partitions, we must convert one of them in an extended partition, within which, can create logical partitions.

One of the drawbacks is that the information is stored together in the fields and can be overwritten, which can endanger the stability of the system in trouble.

GPT (GUID Partition Table)

Intended to replace the UEFI , the information is treated in each partition by a globally unique identifier GUID (Globally Unique IDentifier), its main advantage is that this way the information is copied in the sectors so multiple, in the event that such information is overwritten or damaged, it is easily recoverable, this makes for a safer mode advantages of GPT and UEFI  so robust that system.

On the other hand, it supports partitions greater than 2TB and is not limited to four primary partitions.
